History
Originally home to the Ahwahneechee, settlers looking to find gold during the California Gold Rush era found Yosemite Valley and noted it's awe. The valley was named by Dr. Lafayette Bunnell. In 1851, attempts to suppress Native American resistance, Army Major Jim Savage led the Mariposa Battalion against the Ahwahnee. Known for their violent territorial disputes, the Ahwahnee fought back ferociously. But their efforts proved futile as they were driven out of the valley the proceeding year. In 1855, James Mason Hutchings and Thomas Ayres were the first two to tour Yosemite Valley. The two were responsible for the first major publications about the valley. This led to the increase in visits to the valley, as the drawings and writings showed appealing detail. From this, hotels, trails, and lodges rose in the valley. However, the grant in 1864 removed most of these buildings and gave them the job of park guardians. Since, protection of Yosemite has heavily risen, featuring help from the army as well as decreased herding and grazing. Today, the park is still going strong, retaining the natural beauty it has since it's founding.
